Full Metal Jacket: The Screenplay
Published in Hardcover by Vintage/Ebury (A Division of Random House Group) (25 January, 1988)
Average review score:

FMJ MUST HAVEHere it is Full Metal Jacket fans, the screenplay from your favorite Vietnam movie. Based on Gustav Hasford's novel, The Short-Timers, this screenplay was written by Hasford, Michael Herr (author of Dispatches and who provides the foreward), and the movie's director - Stanley Kubrick. If you've ever read The Short-Timers, you'll notice that some of the dialogue was lifted verbatim (not that that's a bad thing, mind you). The best thing about this book (besides being an oversized trade paperback) are the 140+ color pictures from the film. No tame behind the scenes shoots here, they're all from the actual movie (the whole movie, not just from a few key scenes). Having just read The Phantom Blooper (Hasford's 1990 follow-up to The Short-Timers), I just had to pull this out again. Semper Fi.

Fusion Management: Harnessing the Power of Six Sigma, Lean, ISO 9001:2000, Malcolm Baldrige, TQM and Other Quality Breakthroughs of the Past Century
Published in Hardcover by QSU Publishing Company (07 March, 2003)
Average review score:

NOW IT ALL COMES TOGETHERThere have been so many management and quality theories over the years - but nobody has told us how they all fit together - in fact they always bad mouth different programs. This book tells how different quality philosophies build on one another. It also has real world examples of how to effectively implement ISO, Six Sigma and "Fusion Management". With the current economy and layoffs I'm ready to use the roadmap to get my company back on track. It is a good quick read, with interesting case studies (I read it on a four hour flight). It may be the most usable business book I've read in quite a long time.

Gambling Times Guide to Blackjack
Published in Paperback by Gambling Times (01 September, 1984)
Average review score:

The Gambling Times Guide to BlackjackThe author Stanley Roberts calls himself the Blackjack Guru of the 80's. gu·ru ( A teacher and guide in spiritual and philosophical matters. A trusted counselor and adviser; a mentor. A recognized leader in a field: the guru of high finance. An acknowledged and influential advocate, as of a movement or idea: This description is totally accurate. A contemporary and a contributor to the founding fathers of Blackjack. Stanley Roberts writes to the beginning Blackjack Player and shows them how to advance through the levels of play needed to become an expert Player. Stanley does this with a minimum of "hype" for any particular system which is so evident in many other Blackjack books. Stanley starts with the development of Blackjack theory and methodology for beating the game. He expalains about the affect of casino rules on the house advantage over the player using noted author Lance Humble as his expert. Stanley explains the use of Basic Strategy as well as any other author. He even goes on with the help of Julian Braun to give the extremely rare and vital information on Double Exposure and Home Game basic strategy. Arnold "the Bishop" Snyder contributes a chapter on the casino conditions and other topics. Jerry Patterson contributes a chapter on a topic that became the next area of attack against the casino, the order of the cards and how it is affected by the shuffle procedure. After all the mathematics of the strategy and count systems had been developed then teams came into play. Ken Uston writes two of the most interesting chapters on team play and getting Barred. All areas of play are discussed including cheating, bankroll management and a plan for progressing up the ranks to an advanced player. This is a terrific for a beginner. There is no advanced strategy for Sale. But, it is written by a true visionary in the gaming world at a time when Blackjack was a Main course on the casino platter.

Gandhi: Portrayal of a Friend (Abingdon Classics)
Published in Paperback by Abingdon Press (February, 1993)
Average review score:

More than research -- personal experienceNobody is better qualified to articulate the merits of Mohandas Gandhi than E. Stanley Jones. First, Jones was a close friend of Gandhi's for many years, and second, Jones was a humble enough westernized Christian to see that the brightest shining light of his time was an eastern Hindu.
Although this book is only 160 pages, it is dynamic enough for Martin Luther King Jr. to consider it the best book on Gandhi ever written. I would only add that this book cannot be simply read and understood, it demands to be demonstrated in the life of the reader

The Gardens of Pompeii: Herculaneum and the Villas Destroyed by Versuvius: Appendices
Published in Hardcover by Melissa Media (December, 1993)
Average review score:

Feels like your thereThis book gives a vivid image of the Roman gardens. It explores the much unknown archeology of agriculture. The beautiful photographs illustrate the precision and wonder of Roman gardening, or the remains of it. I highly recomend this book to anyone interested in Pompeii or just the average run of the mill gardener.

Gate Breakers
Published in Paperback by WinePress Publishing (November, 1998)
Average review score:

Concise Overview of World ReligionsThis book provides an excellent overview of world religions and how they relate to Christian thought. Fleming provides an excellent resource for responding to the need of Christians to be witnesses of Christ to all people.
This book is reminiscent of Walter Martin's 'Kingdom of the Cults' but is in an easier to read format.

Geology
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (March, 1999)
Average review score:

Amazing geologist!I had Chernicoff as a geology professor at the University of Washington, and we used his book. Not only were his classes fascinating, but his book was fabulous. The way he put it together and explained everything was fantastic; he excells at making those of us foreign to the world of geology interested in the subject (especially undergrads who are taking a geology class because it's required!). Furthermore, he does so in a way that is easily understandable and not at all confusing. He gives countless examples of what he is describing throughout, making the material even more easy to digest. It is easy to tell that he has a passion for what he does; it shows through in his writing. This is a perfect starting place for those interested in geological matters.

Geology: An Introduction to Physical Geology

A great book that shows that geology isn't a boring scienceMr. Chernicoff has written a book that makes geology look both fun and informative. The book itself is a pretty lengthy but filled with exicting information. Chernicoff is also a pretty good teacher, I recieved a 3.5 in his class.

George Mills
Published in Paperback by Dalkey Archive Pr (May, 2003)
Average review score:

DazzlingElkin is about as good as it gets when it comes to fiction (modern, postmodern, classical or otherwise), and GM, while not his best (as he claimed) is awfully good. In reading his novels and stories, one needs to simply go with it: there's a kind of quote/unquote dao that's a prerequisite, and you'll need it with GM more than the others. But once you're in the groove of his prose and story you'll be ... well, enchanted is not quite the word for it. Enhanced is probably a better one. While I'd recommend this book highly, I'd also recommend picking up The Franchiser or The Magic Kingdom first. Elkin was one of our very, very best, so you can't really go wrong with any of his titles.

George Nelson: The Design of Modern Design
Published in Hardcover by MIT Press (07 November, 1994)
Average review score:

A Comprehensive Study of the Work by George NelsonAlthough the book is minimal on color illustrations and its strength relies mainly on its text, contrary of what I had expected, I was very pleased with it. It is a very comprehensive study of the work of Nelson, one of the pioneers of American industrial design, giving more importance to the concepts and the process of design, rather than to the produced objects, buildings and exhibitions themselves. The preface by Ettore Sottssass is equally outstanding, as most of his written works are.
